Kamvas podcast script (Cosplay life drawing)

Bri: Art and cosplay, how do the two mix? Today on the Kamvas Podcast we will be hearing from Sam Lonquist, a member of the Anime club at TRU. She has been active in the club for 3 years now and attended a life drawing event hosted by the anime club that was hosted in the international building on March 3rd. Sam, could you tell us a bit about that?

Sam:  As far as I’m aware this was the first time Anime club and VASA have paired up to do an event like this, but I would attend again. I felt a bit confused and underwhelmed for the first 20 minutes or so because of how few people there, but we ended up with about 8 artists, some of which were from the Arts Program and about 5 models total. It was a very calm environment. There was lots of water, soda, chips and cookies, as well as plenty of pencils and sketching paper.

Bri: How did having student’s from the Art Program affect the event? Was there any guidance into the life draw?

Sam:  There was at least 3 different art students in the room that could have helped if needed, but there was little discussion surrounding life drawing and we were just sort of thrown into it.

Bri: So it was more self lead then? How did that help you with art?

Sam:  I am by no means an artist but I used to sketch a bit so it gave me an outlet to just practice and not take things too seriously as we had a time limit for each drawing. I felt as though my drawings were getting better the more I did it. I think the event was good for both new and veteran artists so long as people are able to have fun with it. The cosplays definitely made things more difficult when drawing as there is often so many intricate details involved. I have never done life drawing before, I just tried my best to get general shapes and silhouettes done before time ran out. I admire the people who know what they’re doing as I looked at other people’s drawings and was very impressed.

Bri: What was your favorite aspect of the event?

Sam: Seeing what poses the models could come up with, and then watching them try to maintain the pose for a minute or longer.

Bri: Sounds like the event was a nice way to improve your art skills, thanks for being our guest today on Kamvas’ Podcast, thanks for joining us on our podcast and we’ll see you next episode where we will chat about another interesting art event near TRU.
